Once known as “the Last Rites” or “Extreme Unction,” this Sacrament used to be only given once, at certainty of death. Since the Church’s teaching on the Anointing of the Sick has expanded, the Sacrament can now be received multiple times for various reasons. Hospice care, serious illness or health conditions are also occasions for this Sacrament, which is intended to give spiritual strength to face challenging illness or sickness in advanced age.
The Sacrament may be received in the home, in the hospital or another care facility. Family members and caregivers are encouraged to be present if possible.
