From the Pastor's Desk - September 14, 2014

Dear Parishioners, As you know, we are blessed to have two permanent deacons, Dave Christensen and Terry Ficenec, in our parish. Since one of the primary ministries of a deacon is that of being a minister of God’s Word at Mass, Deacon Dave has requested to preach once every other month and Deacon Terry desires to do so once a month. I am happy to fulfill their requests for such. In their National Directory for the Formation, Ministry, and Life of Permanent Deacons in the United States, no. 31, our American bishops have the following to say regarding permanent deacons:
The deacon participates as an evangelizer and teacher in the Church’s mission of heralding the word. In the liturgy of the word, especially in the Eucharist or in those liturgies where he is the presiding minister, the deacon proclaims the Gospel. He may preach by virtue of ordination and in accord with the requirements of Canon Law.
As, a priest, while when I preach the homily at Mass, I am preaching to myself as well while I am doing so to the congregation, it is also good to hear another priest or a deacon give the homily. On the Sundays that our deacons preach, my listening to their homilies will be the “homily” that I will be giving. It is good for all to see the priest being preached to as this highlights that the priest has to be the leader in hearing God’s Word and putting it into practice. So, please keep them in your prayers as they provide this rich ministry to us here at St. Joseph Parish. Also, I want to thank their wives, Linda Christensen and Karen Ficenec, for the ways that we are graced with their service to our parish. Finally, I congratulate Terry and Karen as they celebrate his tenth anniversary of ordination to the Diaconate.
Have a wonderful and grace-filled week.
God bless you,
Fr. Gutowski
