From the Pastor's Desk - August 15, 2014

Dear Parishioners, This weekend we welcome Sr. Kate Brenner from the School Sisters of St. Francis of Milwaukee who is making the annual mission appeal in our parish. Please be generous in supporting the mission work of the Sisters. Envelopes were provided in last week’s bulletin, which, if you did not return this weekend, can be placed in the collection the next couple of weekends. Please keep the School Sisters of St. Francis in your prayers as well.

Regarding another serious matter, Pope Francis has repeatedly called on the world community to pray for peace in Iraq. The Islamic State (ISIS) has occupied large sections of Iraq, destroying, burning and looting churches, homes and businesses. In response to the escalating violence in Iraq, Archbishop Lucas and our American bishops have called for a Day of Prayer for Peace to be held August 16-17, 2014. Please pray this weekend as well as at least this coming week a special prayer written by His Beatitude Louis Rafael Sako, Chaldean Catholic Patriarch of Iraq, for peace in the Middle East, but especially in Iraq:

Lord,
The plight of Iraq
is deep and the suffering of Christians
is severe and frightening.
Therefore, we ask you Lord
to spare the lives of the Iraqi people, and to grant them patience,
and courage to continue their witness of Christian values,
with trust and hope.
Lord, peace is the foundation of life;
Grant Iraq and its people the peace and stability that will enable them
to live with each other without fear and anxiety,
and with dignity and joy.
Glory be to you forever. Amen.

Also, our bishops in Nebraska are encouraging us to contact our Nebraska Congressional delegation to let them know of our concerns for Christians and other religious minorities who are suffering in Iraq, Syria, Egypt and other countries.

Finally, over the next several weeks preparations will be made to carry out the Ignite the Faith archdiocesan capital campaign that will also include a parish campaign. The campaign will be kicked-off in September, but I just want to once again make mention of it to keep everyone aware that it will be taking place soon. Please pray for the success of the campaign, which provides not only for archdiocesan needs but will also benefit our paying down of the construction loan on our new Religious Education building.

Have a blessed and grace-filled week.
God bless you,
 Fr. Gutowski
