From the Pastor's Desk - August 6, 2012

Dear Parishioners,

Next month Catholics throughout the world will begin the special Year of Faith. On October 11, 2011, in his Apostolic Letter entitled Porta Fidei (The Door of Faith), Pope Benedict XVI announced that from October 11, 2012 (the 50th Anniversary of the opening of Vatican II) through November 24, 2013 (the Feast of Christ the King) the Church would celebrate a Year of Faith. Our Holy Father has recognized that, due to social, cultural, and political developments, the beliefs and moral values of Christianity no longer are the anchors of everyday life in large swathes of society. This, he says, has created a profound crisis of faith that has affected many persons whereby many who are baptized have become tasteless salt or are keeping their light hidden failing to live Christ’s challenge to be the salt of the earth and light to the world (see Mt 5:13-16). Therefore the Pope desires that all in the Church, whether already living Christ’s call to be salt and light or not, take up the challenge of rediscovering the journey of faith by taking time to reflect upon the act of faith by which we entrust ourselves to the Lord and the content of our Catholic faith as it is professed, celebrated, lived, and prayed. This Year of Faith thus summons all baptized Catholics to an authentic and renewed conversion to the Lord and provides the opportunity for all to adhere more consciously and vigorously to the Gospel and to profess our Catholic faith in its fullness with renewed vigor. Due to this call of the Pope for this, my column will include reflections on these themes throughout the Year of Faith starting in October. Also, there will be some opportunities for adult formation throughout the year, one of these being an online opportunity that the Archdiocese is making available for some parishes to pilot during the Year of Faith. Details will be provided in the future as these become available.

Have a blessed and grace-filled week.

God bless,  Fr. Gutowski
