From The Pastor's Desk - October 16, 2011

Dear Parishioners,
With October being Respect Life Month, I encourage you to offer special prayers this month that the Gospel of Life be accepted by all in society so that we will know a thorough culture of life pervading society. We pray for respect for life from the moment of conception to natural death. We pray for an end to abortion. We pray for an end to assisted suicide. We pray for an end of the destruction of human embryos for research. We pray for an end to the federal government using our tax dollars to pay for such assaults upon life and that the movement to force mandatory coverage of contraception in health plans is halted. We pray for women and men who out of fear turn to settle difficult situations through an anti-life choice of action. We pray for all of our elected officials that they will use their power to serve life and not destroy life. We have much for which to pray to see that the most fundamental issue of social justice—respect for all human life—be realized in our society. Because of this, I invite you to attend a special prayer service for life at 2:00 P.M. next Sunday, October 23, at the Holy Family Shrine south of Gretna. Since our church is undergoing renovation, I thought it would be nice if we held our annual parish Hour of Prayer for Life at the Shrine. It will give us an opportunity to make a pilgrimage to the Shrine, another small sacrifice that we can offer to the Lord as a prayer for respect for life. At
this prayer service, the Nebraska State Knights of Columbus have provided a special image of our Lady of Guadalupe for our veneration. The Knights are engaged in a Year of Marian Prayer and decided to have images blessed in Mexico City at the Shrine of Our Lady Guadalupe with some soil from the shrine there attached to the bottom of the images, having enough of these images made so that one would be available to each diocese to travel from parish to parish throughout the year. We will have the honor of our prayer service being the first time in the Archdiocese of Omaha that the image is displayed and venerated. For such, we are most grateful to the Knights of Columbus.

You probably have not missed the difference in the landscaping around the church and rectory that has taken place this past week. This has been made possible through an anonymous donation of $100,000. This was given to the parish for the restricted purpose of the sprucing up of the outside of the church, which included the painting of the trim. I had the landscaper move many of the shrubs and plants that were around the church to around the rectory, so that these would not go to waste. Whatever remains from this donation once the outside work is finished, the donor has designated to be applied to the inside renovation of the church. So, let us be grateful for this generous donation and pray for the donor.

Hope you have a wonderful and blessed week.

God bless,

Father Gutowski
