From The Pastor's Desk - June 12, 2011

Dear Parishioners,
As we celebrate Pentecost Sunday this weekend, we come to the end of the Easter Season. During these past seven weeks as we celebrated the Resurrection of our Lord we have been reminded of our future hope of new life and resurrection. We look forward to the new heavens and the new earth that God has promised us when sin and death will be no more. We have recalled that we have been made for eternity; that this world is passing away, that nothing in this world matters in the face of the eternal gifts we hope to come to enjoy. It is the Holy Spirit who enlightens us to know this truth about what is really valuable. So, let us pray on this Pentecost Sunday that the Holy Spirit renew in us our longing for the eternal life that Jesus promises to us as we also pray that we be made holy by the indwelling of the Holy Spirit in our souls. Since most of us probably do not pray as often to the Person of the Holy Spirit as we do to Jesus, the Son of God, or to the Father, here is a prayer that is good to pray daily or, at least, from time to time as a novena asking for the help of the Holy Spirit:

Oh Holy Spirit, You are the Third Person of the Blessed Trinity. You are the Spirit of truth, love and holiness, proceeding from the Father and the Son, and equal to Them in all things. I adore You and love You with all my heart. Teach me to know and to seek God, by whom and for whom I was created. Fill my heart with a holy fear and a great love for Him. Give me compunction and patience, and do not let me fall into sin.

Increase faith, hope and charity in me and bring forth in me all the virtues proper to my state of life. Help me to grow in the four cardinal virtues, Your seven gifts and Your twelve fruits.

Make me a faithful follower of Jesus, an obedient child of the Church and a help to my neighbor. Give me the grace to keep the commandments and to receive the sacraments worthily. Raise me to holiness in the state of life to which You have called me, and lead me through a happy death to everlasting life. Through Jesus Christ, our Lord.

Grant me also, O Holy Spirit, Giver of all good gifts, the special favor for which I ask {name special petition}, if it be for Your honor and glory and for my wellbeing. Amen.

On another note, to update you, I and the parish council are at the point of gathering together the bids on the renovation project and hope to be able to submit the plan to the Archdiocese by the end of the month. One thing that is going to be occurring soon is the painting of the trim on the church, social hall, and rectory, which is being paid for by a generous donation. We have chosen to paint the trim a bronze color that matches the color of the door and window frames. As more details of the renovation become available, I will keep you posted.

Hope your summer is going well and that you have a great week.

God bless,
Fr. Gutowski
