From The Pastor's Desk - August 30, 2010

Dear Parishioners,

One of the areas of our parish life to which I want to dedicate time is that of adult faith formation.  The Catholic parish is to be a “School of Faith” for persons of every age.  No matter what age we are, Jesus calls us to continually be formed in the knowledge and practice of his teaching that comes to us through the teaching activity of the Church.

One opportunity that I wish to provide is that of the study of the Bible.  The program that I am offering is The Great Adventure Bible Timeline study.  It consists of 24, one-and-a-half hour sessions, which center around viewing a DVD video of a presentation by Jeff Cavins, and then I will facilitate a discussion.  At the first session I will show the materials that can be obtained that provide further study on one’s own time in preparation for the sessions.  I am setting no particular cost, but free-will offerings will be accepted.  I want anyone who desires to do this to be able to do so, thus I do not want placing any fee on it to be an issue that would prohibit any interested parishioner from doing it.  Also, you can invite family and friends from outside of the parish, Catholic or not, to participate also.  It will meet on various Tuesdays in the social hall, from 7:00 P.M. to 8:30 P.M., during the coming year on the following dates:

2010:  September 21; September 28; October 12; October 19; October 26; November 9; November 16; November 23; November 30; December 14

2011:  January 11; January 18; February 8; February 15; February 22; March 8; March 15; March 22; March 29; April 12; April 26; May 10; May 17; May 24

Please sign up for this Bible study by September 7 on the sheet that is provided on the table in the entry of the church, e-mail me at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it , or call the rectory.

Another opportunity that I will be providing is a discussion of various topics of our Catholic faith that I am calling “Faith Bites.”  I will offer this in church from 6:00 to 6:55 P.M. and repeat the same topic from 7:05 to 8:00 P.M. on the second and fourth Wednesdays of the month, as the CCD calendar allows, on the following dates:

2010:  September 8; October 13; October 27; November 10
2011:  January 12; January 26; and February 23.

I encourage anyone in the parish to attend, but I especially desire that the parents who bring their children for religious education on Wednesday evenings to stay and refresh themselves in the knowledge of our Catholic faith so as to be better teachers of the faith in the home.  There is no need to sign up for this, but, if you choose to come, please put on the sheet provided in the entry of the church, e-mail me at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it , or call the rectory and let me know which questions you have about the faith and which topics you would like me address and discuss.

Finally, here is the next FAQ on the new English translation of the Roman Missal:

If my parish likes the old translation better, can we continue using that one?
After the Holy See grants the recognitio to the revised translation, the USCCB will establish a date for first use and a date for mandatory use. No parish may continue to use the current translation after the mandatory use date. Parishes will need to use the period before the mandatory use date to help parishioners renew their love for the Sacred Liturgy, to understand the changes, and to develop an appreciation for the revised translation.

On August 20 last week, Cardinal George of Chicago, who is the current president of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, issued a letter confirming that November 27, 2011, the first Sunday of Advent next year, will be the date on which the new translation will be implemented.

Have a terrific week.

God bless,
Fr. Gutowski
